Costumes

Picture
For competition or performance, beginner dancers need not worry about costumes right away. All that is required to wear is a navy blue skirt (or navy pants for boys) and a white blouse/shirt. The only “musts” are the proper Irish dance shoe and the traditional Irish Dance sock (available at the studio for purchase).

Once the dancer is at the “Advanced Beginner” level, they are candidates for the school dress. Irish dance dresses have stiffened skirts with celtic knotwork design embroidered or appliquéd on the skirt, sleeve and bodice. Dresses all have a shawl which also sports the celtic design.

Each school has its own colours and knotwork design. The Sue Fay Healy colour is navy blue and the embroidery colours are yellow, red, white and lime green.

Teens have the option of choosing a soft skirted version of the school dress.

Once dancers have progressed to the higher levels of dance, they can make arrangements to have a solo dress made. These dresses are chosen by the dancer.

Any Irish dance dress must be made by a seamstress that has experience making these dresses. They are complicated and time consuming to make.

No matter what level the dancer is at, they must always have a school dress. They cannot dance in figure dances without one.
